Quick check: after plugging in headphones, right-click the speaker icon → Open Volume Mixer. Does the headphones entry appear? If not, Windows didn’t detect the headphone connection. If it appears, Windows knows they’re there but may not be routing audio to them as the default device.

Fix 1: Set as Default Playback Device

The single most common cause of “headphones not working” that isn’t actually a hardware or driver problem: the headphones aren’t set as the default playback device. When you plug in headphones, Windows adds them to the device list but doesn’t always make them the default — particularly if you’ve customised your default settings previously.

Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings → More sound settings → Playback tab. Your headphones should appear here. Right-click → Set as Default Device. Test audio immediately. If audio plays through the headphones, that was the entire issue.

Also check that the headphones aren’t “Disabled” — right-click a greyed-out device → Enable before setting as default.

USB headsets and headphones don’t use the system audio driver — they have their own built-in audio processing. When Windows detects a USB audio device, it appears as a separate entry in Sound settings with its own driver.

If a USB headset isn’t being detected: try a different USB port, check Device Manager for any USB audio device with a warning triangle, and check for manufacturer-specific drivers that may need to be installed for the headset to work correctly beyond basic audio.

If it’s detected but not working: in Sound settings → Playback, select the USB audio device as default. Also check the headset’s own volume and mute controls — many USB headsets have independent hardware volume and mute that Windows doesn’t control. A muted physical hardware button shows as “working” in Windows but produces no sound.
