Wi-Fi 5 GHz not showing up on Windows 11 — the 5 GHz network is invisible while 2.4 GHz networks appear normally — is almost always a hardware capability or driver issue. The 5 GHz band is physically different from 2.4 GHz and requires specific hardware support and driver configuration. Quick check first: does the 5 GHz network exist? Confirm on a phone or another device that the 5 GHz network is broadcasting. Many routers have a single SSID that covers both bands; if your router uses separate SSIDs (like “HomeNetwork” and “HomeNetwork_5G”), confirm the 5 GHz one appears on the other device. If it doesn’t show on any device: the router’s 5 GHz band is the problem, not Windows.
Check if the adapter supports 5 GHz
Not all Wi-Fi adapters support the 5 GHz band. Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click the Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Advanced tab → look for “Preferred Band” or “Band Preference” settings. If these options don’t exist and there’s no mention of 802.11a or 802.11ac/ax in the adapter name or properties: the adapter only supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz will never be visible regardless of other settings.
You can also check: Win+S → “Network and Internet” → Wi-Fi → look at the connected or available networks. Most dual-band adapters show both bands when available. If only 2.4 GHz appears and the adapter genuinely supports 5 GHz: it’s a driver or configuration issue.
Fix 1: Update the Wi-Fi driver
An outdated or incorrect Wi-Fi driver is the most common cause of 5 GHz disappearing or never appearing. Generic Windows drivers from Windows Update sometimes don’t include the full dual-band capability configuration that manufacturer-specific drivers do.
For laptops: download the Wi-Fi driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page for your exact model number — not from the Wi-Fi chip manufacturer (Intel, Qualcomm, Realtek) directly, as laptop-specific drivers include hardware-level configuration for the specific antenna layout. After installing and restarting: check whether 5 GHz networks appear.
Fix 2: Set the preferred band
The Wi-Fi adapter has a configurable band preference. When set to “Prefer 2.4 GHz” or “2.4 GHz only”: the adapter avoids 5 GHz networks even if they’re available. Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click the Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Advanced tab → find one of these settings:
- “Preferred Band” → set to “Auto” or “Prefer 5GHz”
- “Wireless Mode” → check whether it’s set to 802.11b/g only (2.4 GHz) — change to “Auto” or “802.11a/g/n/ac” to enable all bands
- “Band” → if set to “2.4GHz Only”: change to “Auto”
Fix 3: Channel and regulatory settings
5 GHz Wi-Fi has country-specific channel restrictions (regulatory domains). If Windows thinks the device is in a country where the 5 GHz channels your router uses are restricted: those channels (and networks on them) become invisible.
Device Manager → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Advanced → look for “Country” or “Region” setting → set to your actual country. Also check “80211d” or “Regulatory Domain” settings if present. Incorrect regulatory settings are more common after Windows Updates that change networking defaults.
Fix 4: Power management
Windows power management can disable 5 GHz support to save power — 5 GHz requires slightly more power than 2.4 GHz. Device Manager → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Also: Advanced tab → “Power Saving Mode” or “Power Management Mode” → set to Maximum Performance or Off.
Fix 5: Router channel configuration
If the router’s 5 GHz band is set to channels 100-165 (DFS channels): these channels are shared with radar and weather equipment. Some Wi-Fi adapters don’t support DFS channels or only support them with a specific driver version. Try changing the router’s 5 GHz channel to a non-DFS channel (36, 40, 44, or 48 in the 5 GHz low band).
In the router admin page: Wireless → 5 GHz → Channel → select a channel in the 36-48 range → save → check whether the network now appears on Windows.
Fix 6: Network reset
Windows stores network adapter configuration that persists through driver reinstalls. A full reset clears this configuration: Settings → Network and internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset → Reset now. After reset: reinstall the Wi-Fi driver from the manufacturer’s page. The clean combination of reset + fresh driver provides the best starting point for dual-band functionality.

Checking supported bands via command line
Administrator Command Prompt:
netsh wlan show drivers
Look at the “Radio types supported” line in the output:
- “802.11b 802.11g 802.11n” — 2.4 GHz only adapter; 5 GHz will never appear
- “802.11a 802.11b 802.11g 802.11n 802.11ac” — dual-band; supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
- “802.11ax” (Wi-Fi 6) or “802.11be” (Wi-Fi 6E/7) — modern dual or tri-band
If 802.11a or 802.11ac/ax aren’t listed: the driver doesn’t expose 5 GHz capability, either because the hardware doesn’t support it or because the driver is incorrect. Updating the driver from the manufacturer may add the missing protocols.
Band steering and hidden 5 GHz networks
Routers with band steering broadcast one SSID that automatically places devices on whichever band is better. Some band steering implementations make the 5 GHz band visible to some devices but not others, depending on signal strength assessments. If the router has band steering enabled and the Windows machine is far from the router:
- The router may be withholding the 5 GHz SSID because it assesses the signal as too weak for reliable 5 GHz connection
- Try moving closer to the router → check if 5 GHz appears
- Or disable band steering in the router admin (Wireless → Band Steering or Smart Connect → Off) → create separate SSIDs for each band → manually connect to the 5 GHz one
5 GHz range and walls
5 GHz Wi-Fi has significantly shorter range than 2.4 GHz. It also penetrates walls and floors less effectively. A device in a different room or floor from the router may simply not receive a strong enough 5 GHz signal to detect the network, even while the 2.4 GHz network (with longer range) is visible. This isn’t a Windows problem — it’s physics.
If 5 GHz appears when very close to the router but not from a normal working location: the 5 GHz signal doesn’t reach reliably. Options: move closer to the router, add a Wi-Fi access point or mesh node nearer to the working location, or use 2.4 GHz from that distance (slower but more reliable).
Wi-Fi 6 and 6 GHz band confusion
Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 add a 6 GHz band (different from 5 GHz). If you have a Wi-Fi 6E or 7 router and a 6 GHz network isn’t appearing: check whether the Windows machine’s Wi-Fi adapter supports 6 GHz — most laptops from before 2022 don’t. Even the Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) without the “E” suffix doesn’t include 6 GHz support. The 6 GHz band requires hardware specifically designed for it.
This is separate from 5 GHz — 5 GHz (802.11a/n/ac/ax) and 6 GHz (802.11ax-E, 802.11be) are distinct frequency ranges with different hardware requirements.
Intel Wi-Fi adapters — specific settings
Intel Wi-Fi adapters (very common in Windows laptops) have detailed settings in Device Manager:
- 802.11a/b/g Wireless Mode: set to “Dual Band 802.11a/b/g”
- 802.11n/ac Wireless Mode: set to “Dual Band 802.11a/n/ac” or higher
- Preferred Band: “Prefer 5GHz band”
- Wireless Mode: “ABGNAC” or “5GHz only” (to force 5 GHz testing)
Intel’s ProSet/Wireless driver from Intel’s website provides more configuration options than the Microsoft-signed generic driver. If the laptop manufacturer’s driver doesn’t have these options: Intel’s own driver from downloadcenter.intel.com for the specific adapter model may expose additional settings.
After Windows 11 upgrade — 5 GHz stopped appearing
Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 sometimes installs a generic Wi-Fi driver that lacks 5 GHz support even for adapters that previously showed 5 GHz in Windows 10. The fix: laptop manufacturer’s support page → download the Wi-Fi driver labelled for Windows 11 specifically → install → restart. If only a Windows 10 driver is available from the manufacturer: try installing it anyway (right-click the installer → Properties → Compatibility → Run compatibility troubleshooter, or install normally — many Windows 10 Wi-Fi drivers work fine on Windows 11).
Diagnosing with Windows built-in troubleshooter
Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Internet Connections → Run. The troubleshooter won’t specifically fix 5 GHz visibility, but it detects driver and adapter configuration errors that might be blocking it. Also: Settings → Network and internet → Wi-Fi → Hardware properties → the “Protocol” field shows the current wireless standard. If it shows only 802.11g (2.4 GHz): the adapter or driver isn’t operating in dual-band mode.

5 GHz Wi-Fi visibility issues are almost always resolved by installing the correct manufacturer driver. The “netsh wlan show drivers” command is the fastest diagnostic — it shows definitively whether the current driver supports 5 GHz at all, which immediately tells you whether a driver update will help or whether the hardware is the limitation.
One frequently overlooked cause: the router’s 5 GHz radio being disabled in the router settings. This is separate from the SSID being hidden — the radio itself can be turned off. Router admin page → Wireless → 5 GHz → confirm the radio is enabled. Some ISP-provided routers ship with 5 GHz disabled by default (a cost-cutting measure) or may have it disabled after a factory reset. Enabling it in the router admin immediately makes the 5 GHz network available to all devices, including Windows machines that previously showed no 5 GHz networks at all.
5 GHz performance once connected
After resolving the detection issue: 5 GHz provides noticeably better performance in most home environments — higher speeds, lower latency, and less interference than the crowded 2.4 GHz band. The trade-off is range. For devices that are reliably within 15-20 metres of the router: 5 GHz is worth the effort to get working. For devices at the edge of coverage: 2.4 GHz provides more reliable connectivity even at slower speeds. Some devices benefit from connecting to different bands for different use cases — streaming and gaming benefit from 5 GHz; smart home devices and general browsing often work fine on 2.4 GHz.
For newer laptops with Wi-Fi 6E or 7 adapters: using the 6 GHz band where available provides the least congested wireless spectrum, as relatively few devices currently use 6 GHz. If the router and adapter both support 6 GHz: enabling it in the router settings and ensuring the correct driver is installed provides the best possible wireless performance. The 6 GHz band behaves similarly to 5 GHz in terms of range characteristics — excellent speed close to the router, limited penetration through walls.
Verifying the connection after fixing 5 GHz visibility
Once 5 GHz networks appear and you’ve connected: confirm the connection is actually using 5 GHz. Settings → Network and internet → Wi-Fi → your network → Properties → “Protocol” shows the wireless standard. “802.11ac” and “802.11ax” connections are on 5 GHz or 6 GHz. “802.11n” can be either band — check the “Band” field specifically. “802.11g” is always 2.4 GHz. Confirming the active band verifies the fix worked rather than just making 5 GHz visible while still being connected to 2.4 GHz through a single-SSID router’s band steering. Understanding that 5 GHz is a fundamentally separate radio band — not just a “faster mode” of the same connection — helps set appropriate expectations. A dual-band adapter is essentially two radios in one device. When 5 GHz stops working while 2.4 GHz continues working, half of the adapter’s radio capability has failed or been disabled. The fixes are essentially: enable the hardware capability (driver, adapter settings), ensure the driver exposes the capability to Windows (manufacturer driver install), and ensure nothing is blocking the connectivity (power management, regulatory settings).
