Wi-Fi dropping repeatedly on Windows 11 — disconnecting every few minutes, losing signal without moving, or dropping then reconnecting within seconds — is frustrating but diagnosable. Run this right now: ping 192.168.1.1 -t (your router’s IP — substitute if different). Leave it running. When the next drop happens, look at the ping output. If ping to the router drops at the same time as internet access: your machine’s connection to the router is dropping — local fix required. If router ping stays consistent while internet fails: the router’s connection to your ISP is dropping — router-side or ISP issue.

Fix 1: Network adapter power management
Windows selectively suspends the Wi-Fi adapter during idle periods to save power. When the adapter powers down and fails to wake correctly: the connection drops. This is the most common software cause of Wi-Fi drops on laptops.
Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Also: Control Panel → Power Options → active plan → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Wireless Adapter Settings → Power Saving Mode → Maximum Performance. Apply both → restart → observe for 30 minutes of idle time (the drop typically happens after 5–10 minutes without movement).
Fix 2: Driver update
Wi-Fi adapter drivers from Windows Update are often generic versions that don’t include the manufacturer’s specific power management and connection stability improvements. Download the Wi-Fi driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the specific model.
If the drops started immediately after a Windows Update: Device Manager → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver. Windows Update regularly replaces manufacturer drivers with generic versions that are less stable on specific hardware.
Fix 3: Network adapter advanced settings
Device Manager → right-click Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Advanced tab:
- Roaming Aggressiveness: if set to “Highest” or “High” on a single-router setup, the adapter constantly scans for better access points, causing brief disconnections during scans. Set to “Medium” or “Low.”
- 802.11 band preference / Preferred band: explicitly set to 5 GHz for the most stable connection on modern routers. Automatic band selection can cause drops when the adapter switches bands.
- Transmit Power: “Highest” — some adapters throttle output on lower settings, reducing connection stability at normal room distances.
Fix 4: Forget and reconnect the network
Corrupted Wi-Fi profile data causes intermittent disconnections even when signal is strong. Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks → find the network → Forget → reconnect and re-enter the password. The fresh profile eliminates any corrupted connection data.
Also: administrator Command Prompt → netsh wlan delete profile name="NetworkName" for a more thorough removal than the UI provides.
Fix 5: Router-side causes
If the router ping also drops during disconnections: the problem is your connection to the router. Possible causes:
- Router channel congestion — too many neighbouring networks on the same channel. Router admin panel → Wireless settings → Channel → try a specific channel (1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz; any unused channel for 5 GHz) rather than “Auto”
- Router firmware outdated — manufacturers fix Wi-Fi stability bugs in firmware updates
- DHCP lease conflicts — router admin → DHCP client list → look for duplicate IPs
- Band steering causing device switches — router moving the device between 2.4 and 5 GHz mid-session
Fix 6: Network stack reset

Administrator Command Prompt → all five → restart. Clears accumulated TCP/IP stack state that can cause connection instability. Most effective when drops started after VPN software installation or after a security software change.
Distance and signal strength
A machine operating at the edge of Wi-Fi coverage experiences intermittent drops as signal fluctuates around the connection threshold. Task Manager → Performance → Wi-Fi → shows the receive signal strength in real-time. Below -70 dBm (shown as very low bars) puts you in a zone where drops are expected. Move closer to the router, use a Wi-Fi extender or mesh node, or switch to ethernet. Signal strength below the threshold can’t be fixed by software changes.

DHCP lease expiry and brief disconnections
When a DHCP lease expires, Windows briefly releases the IP address and requests a new one. During this 1–3 second renewal process, ongoing connections experience a brief interruption that appears as a Wi-Fi drop. Most applications handle this gracefully, but real-time applications (gaming, video calls, live streaming) notice it as a momentary disconnect.
Fix: increase the DHCP lease time in the router admin panel (often set to 1 hour by default — increase to 24 hours for devices that are always at home). Or assign a static IP to the machine: Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → your network → IP settings → Manual → configure a static IP in the same range as the router but outside its DHCP pool. Static IPs never expire and eliminate lease renewal drops entirely.
IP address conflicts after sleep
When a machine wakes from sleep, it tries to reclaim its previous IP address. If another device was assigned that IP during sleep (because the lease expired), an IP conflict occurs — both devices claim the same address, creating network instability. The machine sees an IP conflict, releases and requests a new address, and the transition produces a brief disconnection.
The same static IP fix resolves this. A machine with a static IP always has the same address regardless of sleep state, eliminating the conflict scenario. The router needs to exclude the static IP from its DHCP pool to prevent it from assigning that address to another device.
Random MAC address and connection instability
Windows 11 has a “Random hardware addresses” feature that changes the device’s MAC address periodically. When the MAC changes: the router’s DHCP server sees a new device and may take time to issue a new lease, causing a brief disconnection during the MAC rotation. Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → your network → Properties → “Random hardware addresses” → change to “Off” for this network. Using a consistent MAC address eliminates the DHCP transition drops caused by address rotation.
Wi-Fi channel width and interference
Modern routers set channel width automatically — 20 MHz in congested areas (more stable, less bandwidth), 40 or 80 MHz in clear areas (faster but more susceptible to interference). In apartment buildings with many networks: automatic channel width selection sometimes switches between widths, causing a brief disconnection during the transition.
Router admin → Wireless → advanced → Channel Width → manually set to 20 MHz (2.4 GHz) or 40/80 MHz (5 GHz, which has less congestion). A manually set channel width eliminates width-switching transitions. On 5 GHz where congestion is low: 80 MHz width gives better throughput and is less likely to switch because there’s less competition forcing the narrower width.
Checking WLAN event log for specific disconnect reasons
Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → WLAN-AutoConfig → Operational. Look for “Disassociating from BSSID” events around disconnect times. The reason code in these events is extremely useful:
- Reason 2: “Previous authentication no longer valid” — session timeout or security key mismatch
- Reason 3: “Deauthenticated because sending STA is leaving” — the adapter itself chose to disconnect (power management or roaming aggressiveness)
- Reason 8: “Disassociated because sending STA is leaving” — the router deauthenticated the device
- Reason 15: “4-way handshake timeout” — encryption negotiation failed
Reason 3 confirms the adapter is causing the disconnect (power management fix). Reason 8 means the router is kicking the device (router firmware or QoS issue). Each reason code points at a specific fix.
Mesh Wi-Fi roaming drops
Mesh systems (Google Nest, Eero, Orbi) move connected devices between nodes as signal changes. The roaming transition — BSSID handoff — causes a 1–3 second disconnection as the device reconnects to the new node. Most applications recover gracefully; real-time applications notice it.
This is normal mesh behaviour, but aggressive roaming (frequent handoffs even with good signal) can be configured in the mesh system’s app. Look for “Roaming sensitivity” or “Band steering” settings — reducing roaming aggressiveness reduces handoff frequency at the cost of sometimes staying on a slightly weaker node when a stronger one is available. For desktop machines that don’t move: use ethernet or a single fixed access point rather than mesh.
ISP modem and line stability
If the router ping stays stable but the internet gateway drops: the issue is between the router and the ISP. Log into the modem admin panel (usually 192.168.100.1 for cable modems) → look at signal levels and upstream power. Cable modems show upstream and downstream power levels and SNR. Upstream power above 48 dBmV or downstream SNR below 30 dB indicates cable plant issues — the physical cable infrastructure between the modem and the ISP’s infrastructure is degraded.
This information is valuable when calling the ISP. Instead of “my internet keeps dropping,” you provide: “modem upstream power is 51 dBmV, downstream SNR is 28 dB, here are timestamps of the drops.” That data moves the tech support call immediately to a dispatch for a cable plant check rather than a 20-minute basic troubleshooting script.
A pattern worth memorising for quick diagnosis: drops that happen at consistent intervals (every 5 minutes, every 30 minutes) are almost always power management or DHCP lease related — mechanical causes with fixed timers. Drops that are completely random and unpredictable are almost always signal quality, interference, or hardware related. Drops that only happen when specific devices or activities are active (VPN connected, certain applications running, specific sites loading) are software or configuration related. The regularity of the drops is the most useful single diagnostic clue before looking at anything else.
Windows 11 Wi-Fi adapter compatibility issues
Some Wi-Fi adapters — particularly Qualcomm adapters in certain laptop models — have known compatibility issues with specific Windows 11 builds that cause random disconnections. These are manufacturer-acknowledged bugs that appear in support advisories. Searching for the specific adapter model (visible in Device Manager → Network Adapters → right-click → Properties → Details → Hardware IDs) alongside “Windows 11 disconnects” often reveals whether there’s a known issue and a specific driver version that resolves it.
The difference between a known bug with a driver fix and a general connectivity problem: the known bug has a specific pattern (happens on specific Windows builds, affects specific adapter models, resolves with a specific driver version). Community reports on forums like Reddit’s r/Windows11 and the specific laptop model’s community often document the exact driver version that fixed the issue, saving significant troubleshooting time.
Antivirus Wi-Fi inspection
Security suites with network protection features (Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET) inspect Wi-Fi traffic for threats. When these features encounter unusual packets, VPN traffic, or specific network protocols, they can momentarily pause the connection — appearing as brief drops. Testing Wi-Fi stability with the antivirus’s network protection temporarily disabled (not the full antivirus, specifically the “Network protection” or “Wi-Fi inspector” feature) confirms whether this is the cause. Add the home network to the security software’s trusted network list if it is the cause — trusted networks receive reduced inspection that doesn’t cause disconnections.
After the fix: monitoring to confirm stability
After applying any fix, run the continuous ping (ping 192.168.1.1 -t) for at least 30 minutes covering a period when drops previously occurred. A clean ping output — all responses, no timeouts — over that period confirms the fix is effective. Continue monitoring during activities that previously triggered drops (video calls, gaming, idle periods) before declaring the issue resolved. Some fixes reduce drop frequency without eliminating them, and continuing to see occasional drops signals that a different or additional fix is still needed.
For machines that have had Wi-Fi dropping issues for a long time without resolution: a USB Wi-Fi adapter (Wi-Fi 6 / 802.11ax, £20–35) bypasses the built-in adapter entirely and often resolves adapter-specific compatibility issues that driver updates can’t fully address.
