Snap Layouts are the window-tiling answer to one of Windows’ oldest annoyances: you need two applications side by side, so you drag one window to the left edge — it snaps to half the screen — then drag the other to the right. That’s fine for two apps. For three or four, the manual dragging becomes its own problem. Snap Layouts skip that entirely with predefined zones and instant placement. The fastest way to use them: hover over a window’s maximise button (the square icon in the top-right corner). After about a second, a grid of layout options appears. Click a zone in the grid — the window moves to that position. Windows then prompts you to fill the remaining zones with other open windows.
Activating Snap Layouts via keyboard
Win+Z opens the Snap Layout picker for the focused window immediately, without needing to aim at the maximise button. The same grid appears; press the number shown in each zone to select it. This is faster than the hover method, especially if you’re already keyboard-focused.
The older snap methods still work alongside Snap Layouts: Win+← or Win+→ snaps the active window to the left or right half of the screen. Dragging a window to the top edge maximises it. Dragging to a corner positions it in a quarter of the screen. These work for quick two-window arrangements; Snap Layouts are the better choice when you want three or four windows in a specific arrangement.
Available layout options
The layouts vary by screen resolution and aspect ratio. On a standard 1080p or 1440p display, you typically get:
- Two equal halves (left and right)
- Two-thirds left, one-third right
- One-third left, two-thirds right
- Three equal columns
- A larger left section with two stacked sections on the right
- Four equal quadrants
On ultrawide monitors: more layouts appear, including wider column arrangements that take better advantage of the extra horizontal space. The layouts adapt to what makes sense for the current display rather than offering a fixed set regardless of screen shape.
Snap Groups — switching between arrangements
When windows are snapped into a layout together, Windows 11 remembers them as a “Snap Group.” In the taskbar, hovering over one application in the group shows a thumbnail of the entire group together. Clicking it restores all the windows in the group simultaneously — returning to the arrangement without having to re-snap each window individually.
This is particularly useful when you need to switch away from a multi-window arrangement (to take a full-screen call, for example) and want to return to exactly where you were. Click the group thumbnail and everything snaps back into place.
Snap Assist — filling the remaining zones
After snapping a window into a zone, Windows shows Snap Assist: a thumbnail gallery of other open windows that you can click to fill the remaining zone. This removes the need to manually drag the second window into position. Click the window you want in the remaining zone — it snaps there automatically.
If you don’t see Snap Assist after snapping a window: Settings → System → Multitasking → ensure “Snap windows” is enabled, and within that section, “Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button” and “Show snap layouts when I drag a window” are both on.
Multi-monitor Snap Layouts
On multi-monitor setups: Snap Layouts work per-monitor. Each screen has its own set of layout zones. Dragging a window to the edge of one monitor snaps it to that monitor’s zone. Snap Groups form per-monitor as well — a group from Monitor 1 is remembered separately from windows on Monitor 2.
A workflow that works particularly well on dual monitors: reference material (documentation, browser tabs for research) snapped on Monitor 2; active work (code editor, document being written) taking up Monitor 1. When you need to check the reference: glance right. When you need the workspace: look left. The snap arrangement on each monitor stays persistent without needing to re-snap when switching focus.
Which applications work with Snap Layouts
Most applications fully support Snap Layouts. However, some applications opt out of snapping by design:
- Fullscreen-exclusive games (by definition can’t be snapped)
- Some legacy Win32 applications with minimum window size requirements — if the snap zone is smaller than the app’s minimum window size, it won’t snap to that zone
- A few apps that explicitly disable the maximise button and window resizing (niche but exists)
Most modern productivity applications, browsers, Office apps, terminals, and development tools support snapping without issues. The layouts won’t appear for applications that can’t be resized.

PowerToys FancyZones — when Snap Layouts aren’t enough
The built-in layouts cover most common arrangements, but they’re not customisable. PowerToys (free from Microsoft, available in the Microsoft Store or GitHub) includes FancyZones, which lets you create custom window zones of any size and position. You can define a layout where three specific columns are exactly the widths you need, or create an asymmetric arrangement that matches your actual workflow.
FancyZones integrates with the same Win+drag workflow — when FancyZones is active, dragging a window while holding Shift shows your custom zones and snaps to whichever you drop on. The custom layouts persist and can be different on each connected monitor. For users who work with Snap Layouts daily and find the built-in options constraining: FancyZones is the natural next step.
Practical Snap Layout workflows
Some arrangements that genuinely improve daily work:
- Writing with reference: two-thirds left for the document, one-third right for source material or browser
- Code + terminal: editor left, terminal right in a 50/50 split — Win+Z to pick the layout, then Snap Assist selects the terminal automatically
- Video call + work: half screen for the call platform, half for the document or presentation being shared
- Email monitoring: main app full width with email client in a narrow right column (one-third)
- Data comparison: two equal halves with the same application or different datasets side by side
The efficiency gain from Snap Layouts comes from eliminating the window-arranging friction that previously interrupted workflow. The first time you use Win+Z and get a three-column arrangement without dragging anything: it’s immediately obvious why this feature was worth building. The habit forms quickly because the result is consistently better than the manual alternative.

Snap Layouts are one of the more practical Windows 11 improvements over Windows 10. The hover-on-maximise discovery mechanism works, but the Win+Z shortcut is what makes the feature genuinely fast once you know it exists. Most users who try it once incorporate it immediately; the barrier is simply awareness that the feature exists and where to find it.
Turning off Snap Layouts
Some users find the Snap Assist popup intrusive — after snapping one window, the gallery of other windows appears automatically and can get in the way. If the popup is the problem but you still want basic window snapping: Settings → System → Multitasking → “Snap windows” → expand the section → uncheck “Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button” while leaving “Snap windows” itself enabled. This removes the hover-triggered popup while keeping Win+Z and the manual snap methods functional.
To disable all snapping entirely: Settings → System → Multitasking → toggle “Snap windows” completely off. This removes all snap behaviour — windows can no longer be snapped by dragging to screen edges, and Win+Z does nothing. This is usually not what you want; the more surgical approach of disabling just Snap Assist or the hover popup is more practical.
Snap Layouts on touchscreens and tablets
On touchscreen Windows 11 devices (Surface tablets, convertibles in tablet mode): Snap Layouts work through touch as well. Drag a window to the top edge to reveal snap zones that you can drop the window into. The same predefined layouts are available. The win+Z keyboard shortcut obviously requires a keyboard; the hover-on-maximise method requires a precise tap, which is easier to trigger by long-pressing the maximise button equivalent in tablet mode.
Windows 11’s tablet mode (which kicks in when a keyboard is detached from a convertible) is more intentional about window management than previous versions. Snap Layouts with touch gives tablet-mode users a gesture-based approach to side-by-side apps that previously required more manual positioning.
Common Snap Layouts problems and fixes
A few situations that users encounter:
- Layout picker doesn’t appear on hover: Settings → System → Multitasking → ensure Snap windows and the hover option are both enabled. Also check that the application actually supports resizing — the picker won’t appear for non-resizable windows.
- Snap Assist doesn’t show other windows after snapping: “Show snap suggestions when a window is snapped” setting is off in Multitasking. Enable it.
- Windows snap to wrong positions: this sometimes happens with non-standard display scaling or when an external monitor changes the available screen geometry. Disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor, or signing out and back in, usually resolves it.
- Snap Group thumbnails not appearing in taskbar: “Show snap layouts when I hover over a taskbar button” needs to be enabled in the Multitasking snap settings.
Snap Layouts in previous Windows versions
Basic window snapping (two halves, Win+← and Win+→) existed since Windows 7’s Aero Snap feature. Windows 10 added Snap Assist (suggesting windows for the other half after snapping). Windows 11 added the visual Snap Layouts grid with multiple layout options and Snap Groups. If you’re familiar with Windows 10’s snapping: Windows 11 extends it rather than replacing it — all the old methods work, with the new layout grid as an addition.
For users coming from macOS: Mission Control’s window management is different from Snap Layouts. Snap Layouts provide instant placement into predefined zones rather than the more spatial window arrangement of Spaces. Users who prefer the spatial approach can use PowerToys FancyZones or the built-in virtual desktops; users who want fast, template-based placement will prefer Snap Layouts’ approach.
Snap Layouts represent a genuine productivity improvement that’s available without installing anything, without learning a complex system, and without significantly changing existing workflow. The feature rewards brief exploration — trying Win+Z on a few different windows to see the available layouts — and then becomes background-automatic once the muscle memory forms. Among Windows 11’s new features, it’s one of the ones that has the most immediate daily impact for people who regularly work with multiple applications.
Using Snap Layouts to establish a consistent workspace
One underappreciated benefit of Snap Layouts over manual window dragging: consistency. When you set up the same arrangement repeatedly — document on the left, reference browser on the right — the snap layout produces an exact result every time. Manual dragging produces “roughly there” results that vary slightly each time. Over the course of a day, the time not spent adjusting windows that are almost but not quite right adds up. The snap-to-exact-zone precision eliminates this minor but persistent friction.
For teams with standardised workflows (shared screen during calls, collaboration tools alongside work applications): being able to replicate an exact screen arrangement from a single Win+Z interaction makes setup reproducible. If your standard call setup is “Teams on the left third, document in the middle, notes on the right third,” this layout takes 15 seconds to recreate from scratch each time — considerably faster than describing and demonstrating the same layout manually to a new team member.
Finally: Snap Layouts save their positions through Alt+Tab. When you Alt+Tab between snapped windows, Windows treats the Snap Group as a unit and cycles through each window within the group in sequence. This is a subtle but useful integration — tabbing through your workspace visits each snapped window without disrupting the arrangement. The entire layout persists correctly regardless of how many times you switch focus, which makes multi-window work significantly smoother than it was when windows had to be manually brought to the foreground and repositioned.
