Windows 11 Gaming Features: Better Performance

Windows 11 includes Game Mode, the Xbox Game Bar, Auto HDR, Variable Refresh Rate, DirectStorage, and DirectX 12 Ultimate — features that together improve frame rates, reduce stutters, and enhance visual quality in games. This guide covers configuring every gaming feature for maximum performance on any hardware.

Windows 11 Gaming Features: Better Performance

Windows 11 has more gaming-specific features than any previous Windows version, and most of them are either off by default or not widely known. This guide covers the ones that actually make a difference — from the mandatory setup steps to the optional features worth enabling for most gaming configurations. Game Mode — enable this first

Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → toggle On. Game Mode tells Windows to prioritise the active game’s CPU and GPU allocation, reduce background activity (Windows Update, telemetry), and prevent driver installations during gaming sessions. It’s disabled by default on some Windows 11 configurations and worth confirming is on before anything else.

The impact of Game Mode is most noticeable on machines running other background applications alongside games — streaming software, Discord, browser tabs. On a machine dedicated entirely to gaming: the improvement is smaller but still relevant for CPU-limited scenarios. Game Mode activates automatically when a recognised game launches; there’s no manual trigger needed per game.

DirectStorage — the load time improvement

DirectStorage allows the GPU to load game assets directly from NVMe storage, bypassing the CPU decompression bottleneck that slows traditional asset loading. Games built with DirectStorage support show significantly faster load times and can load higher-resolution textures without the stutter that previously accompanied rapid camera movement.

Requirements: Windows 11, an NVMe SSD (SATA SSDs see limited benefit), a DirectX 12 GPU, and a game built with DirectStorage support. The feature activates automatically when all requirements are met — there’s no user toggle. Compatible games: check the game’s system requirements page for “DirectStorage” support. As of 2025, the number of DirectStorage-enabled games has grown significantly, making NVMe SSDs more valuable for gaming than they were at Windows 11’s launch.

Auto HDR

Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar → “Auto HDR.” Also reachable: Settings → System → Display → “Windows HD Color settings” → “Auto HDR.” When on: DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games that weren’t built with HDR get an HDR post-processing pass applied automatically. The result: more vibrant colours, better contrast, and an impression of HDR depth in games that never had it.

Auto HDR requires an HDR-capable monitor with HDR enabled in Windows display settings. On SDR monitors: the option doesn’t appear. The quality varies by game — in some titles it looks excellent; in others it can look over-saturated. It can be toggled per-game via the Xbox Game Bar (Win+G → the Auto HDR toggle in the Game Bar interface) without changing the global setting.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

Settings → System → Display → “Variable refresh rate.” When on: Windows allows games to vary the monitor’s refresh rate dynamically to match the frame rate being rendered. This eliminates screen tearing without the input lag introduced by traditional V-Sync. Requires a monitor that supports G-Sync, FreeSync, or VESA Adaptive Sync, and a compatible GPU.

If the option is greyed out or missing: either the monitor doesn’t support adaptive sync, the connection type doesn’t support it (some HDMI configurations don’t), or the GPU driver needs updating. NVIDIA and AMD GPU drivers both include adaptive sync configuration in their own control panels if the Windows toggle isn’t accessible.

Xbox Game Bar

Win+G opens the Xbox Game Bar overlay — a collection of widgets accessible during gaming without alt-tabbing. Available tools:

  • Performance widget: real-time FPS counter, GPU usage, CPU usage, RAM, VRAM. Essential for monitoring performance without third-party tools.
  • Capture widget: screenshots and video recording. Win+Alt+PrtScn for screenshot, Win+Alt+R to start/stop recording. Recordings saved to VideosCaptures.
  • Audio widget: per-application volume control during gaming — adjust Discord volume relative to game audio without alt-tabbing.
  • Xbox Social widget: see which Xbox friends are online and what they’re playing.
  • Looking For Group (LFG): find other players for multiplayer games.

Customise which widgets appear in Game Bar: Win+G → the Settings icon in Game Bar → rearrange or remove widgets. The Performance widget alone is worth knowing about — it’s a free FPS counter and system monitor that requires no additional software.

Captures and game clips

Settings → Gaming → Captures configures recording quality, frame rate, and whether audio is included. Key settings:

  • Record in background: allows the last X minutes of gameplay to be saved retroactively (Win+Alt+G saves the last clip). Useful for capturing unexpected moments after they happen.
  • Video frame rate: 30fps for storage efficiency, 60fps for smoother playback. Capture at the highest frame rate your storage can handle without stuttering.
  • Video quality: Standard vs High. High produces noticeably better-looking recordings at the cost of larger files.
  • Capture location: change from default VideosCaptures if preferred.

GPU scheduling and hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS)

Settings → System → Display → Graphics → “Default graphics settings” → “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling” → toggle On. HAGS allows the GPU to manage its own memory scheduling rather than routing it through the CPU, reducing latency in some scenarios.

The actual benefit of HAGS varies by game and hardware — some combinations show meaningful latency improvements; others show no difference. On modern NVIDIA (RTX 20xx and later) and AMD (RX 5000 and later) GPUs: it’s worth enabling and testing. The downside risk is minimal; if it causes any issues: toggle it off and restart.

Windows 11 gaming and antivirus exclusions

Windows Defender scans files as they’re accessed. Game directories contain thousands of asset files, and Defender scanning them during loading can cause stuttering and increased load times. Adding game directories to Defender exclusions reduces this overhead without reducing overall system security (the games are already installed and Defender has already scanned them).

Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add an exclusion → Folder → navigate to the game installation folder (Steamsteamappscommon, Epic Games, etc.). This is particularly impactful for open-world games that stream assets from disk during play — the exclusion reduces mid-game stutter caused by real-time antivirus scanning during asset loading.

Power settings for gaming performance

Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode → “Best performance.” On laptops: also ensure you’re plugged in during gaming sessions — Power saver and Balanced modes throttle CPU performance when on battery in ways that visibly affect frame rates. The performance difference between “Best performance” (plugged in) and “Balanced” (on battery) is significant for CPU-limited games.

For desktop machines: “Best performance” is always appropriate. On high-end gaming PCs where thermals are the primary constraint: CPU-intensive workloads benefit from the GPU and CPU running at full capability rather than being throttled by power plan constraints.

Windows 11’s gaming features require less configuration than many users expect — Game Mode, VRR, and HAGS are simple toggles; DirectStorage is automatic. The biggest gains come from confirming these are enabled, adding game directories to Defender exclusions, and setting the power plan appropriately. None of these require third-party software or deep technical knowledge, yet they collectively improve gaming performance and experience meaningfully over a default Windows 11 configuration.

Managing app-specific GPU assignments

Settings → System → Display → Graphics → shows a list of applications and which GPU they’re assigned to (for machines with both integrated and discrete GPU). By default, Windows assigns applications to the GPU it thinks is most appropriate. For games: ensuring they’re assigned to the discrete (dedicated) GPU rather than the integrated one makes a significant performance difference on laptops with both.

Click any application in the list → Options → set to “High performance” (discrete GPU). For games not listed: “Add an app” → browse to the game executable. On NVIDIA laptops: the NVIDIA Control Panel provides more granular GPU assignment control per application, including forcing specific titles to the discrete GPU even when Windows’ default would choose integrated.

Xbox App and PC Game Pass

The Xbox app (pre-installed on Windows 11) manages Xbox Game Pass PC titles, provides the social features (friends, achievements), and integrates with Xbox Cloud Gaming. For Game Pass subscribers: the Xbox app is the primary launcher for PC Game Pass titles. It also provides access to the Microsoft Store for game purchases.

Game Bar settings (accessible within the Xbox app or via Win+G → Settings) control notifications, capture quality, and which Game Bar widgets appear. If Game Bar isn’t working correctly: Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar → ensure it’s enabled, and that the keyboard shortcut (Win+G) is active. Some games and applications block Game Bar’s overlay — typically games with their own anti-cheat systems that conflict with overlay software.

Focus Assist for gaming

Settings → System → Notifications → Focus Assist → when “When I’m playing a game” is enabled: Windows automatically activates Do Not Disturb mode when a fullscreen game is detected, suppressing notifications that would otherwise appear over the game. This is on by default in Windows 11 but worth confirming if notifications are interrupting gaming sessions.

Game Bar’s Focus Assist integration means you can also manually toggle Do Not Disturb from within the Game Bar during a session without alt-tabbing to settings. The audio notification suppression during gaming prevents the familiar situation of a Teams ping appearing over a game during a critical moment.

Windows 11 and anti-cheat compatibility

Some older anti-cheat systems are incompatible with Windows 11 because they relied on Windows kernel behaviours that changed. Kernel-level anti-cheat systems (Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Riot’s Vanguard) generally have Windows 11 compatibility, but may require their own drivers that are automatically installed with the games that use them.

If a game that previously worked stops launching after a Windows 11 update: check whether the anti-cheat component has a compatibility update. The game developer typically releases an update quickly after major Windows changes. Also check: VBS (Virtualization-Based Security) and HVCI (Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity) — Windows 11 security features — may conflict with some older anti-cheat systems. Settings → System → About → Device security → check Core isolation status. Disabling Core isolation is sometimes cited as a fix for anti-cheat compatibility, though it reduces system security and should only be done with awareness of the trade-off.

Monitoring gaming performance without third-party tools

Windows 11 provides adequate performance monitoring for gaming without needing FRAPS, MSI Afterburner, or other overlays:

  • Xbox Game Bar Performance widget: FPS, GPU usage, CPU usage, RAM, temperature (on some hardware). Win+G → Performance widget → “Always on top” option keeps it visible over the game.
  • Task Manager: Alt+Tab → Task Manager during gaming. Shift+Esc works from within some games without full alt-tab. Shows GPU, CPU, memory at the application level.
  • GPU driver overlays: NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience (Alt+Z) and AMD’s Radeon Software both include in-game overlays with performance metrics if you prefer the GPU manufacturer’s tools over Game Bar.

For detailed performance analysis (frame time graphs, 1% and 0.1% lows, GPU-CPU frametimes): third-party tools like CapFrameX or PresentMon (the Microsoft tool that Game Bar itself uses internally) provide more analysis depth than Game Bar’s real-time display. These are useful for systematic performance testing rather than casual gaming monitoring.

Gaming on Windows 11 is genuinely better-supported than on Windows 10 at the feature level — DirectStorage, Auto HDR, and the improved Game Mode are real improvements that arrived with Windows 11.
