The one-minute check before anything else: open the Windows Camera app (search “Camera” in Start). Does it show a live preview? If yes, your camera hardware is fine and the issue is Teams-specific. If the Camera app also shows black or an error, the problem is at the Windows level — fix it there first, and Teams will work automatically.

The Fastest Fixes — Try These First

Close every other app using the camera: Zoom, Skype, Discord, browser tabs with camera access, and the Windows Camera app itself. Only one application can use the camera simultaneously. If Teams tries to access a camera that another app has locked, Teams gets a black preview. Close everything else, then start Teams and join the meeting.

In Teams, explicitly select your camera: During a call or in pre-call settings → the camera dropdown next to the camera icon → select your physical camera by name. Don’t rely on “Default” — if Windows’ default changed after you plugged in headphones or connected a webcam, Teams may be pointing at a virtual camera or the wrong device. Fix 1: Teams Camera Settings in Detail

Teams has its own camera configuration that operates independently from Windows defaults. Before a meeting: click your profile picture → Settings → Devices → Camera. The preview shows a live feed if the selected camera is working correctly. Use the dropdown to switch between available cameras. A black preview here with all privacy settings correct indicates either driver or exclusive access is the issue.

During a meeting: click the three-dot menu → Device settings → Camera → change the selected camera. If you connected an external webcam after joining the meeting, it may not have appeared in the list — leave and rejoin the meeting to allow Teams to re-enumerate available camera devices.

Fix 2: Update or Reinstall the Camera Driver

Windows updates regularly replace working camera drivers with generic versions. For built-in laptop cameras, the manufacturer’s driver provides correct array configuration, noise cancellation, and auto-exposure. The generic Windows driver may show a camera preview but with poor quality or incorrect orientation.

Download the camera driver from your laptop manufacturer’s support page, not from Windows Update or Device Manager’s automatic search. The manufacturer driver page typically lists it as “Camera driver,” “Webcam driver,” or by the camera chip manufacturer’s name (Intel RealSense, Logitech, ImagingTech).

For a clean reinstall: Device Manager → Cameras → right-click → Uninstall device → tick “Delete the driver software” → restart → install the manufacturer driver. The double-step of uninstalling the current driver before installing the new one avoids version conflicts that update-over-update creates.

Fix 3: Camera Process Conflict

When Teams shows a black camera preview despite correct settings: Task Manager → look at all running processes → close any application that might hold a camera lock. The non-obvious culprits: remote desktop sessions (RDP claims camera access), virtual meeting room software running as a background service, and browser windows with active camera permissions (check the camera icon in each browser tab’s address bar).

After closing potential conflicts, completely quit Teams (system tray → Quit, not just close the window → Task Manager to confirm all Teams processes are gone) → reopen Teams → test camera in Settings → Devices before joining a call.

Fix 4: New Teams vs Classic Teams

Microsoft migrated users from Classic Teams (version 1.x) to New Teams (version 2.x+) starting in 2023. The indicator: camera worked previously and stopped after a policy change or device compliance check from IT. Testing in Safe Mode (which typically doesn’t load corporate security agents) can confirm whether security software is the blocking agent. On corporate machines, contact IT to create a camera access exception rather than trying to work around the policy.

Camera Works in Preview But Goes Black During Calls

A camera that shows a live preview in Teams Settings but goes black when a meeting starts is a different problem from the camera not working at all. This specific pattern — preview works, call goes black — usually indicates a resource conflict that only triggers when multiple meeting participants are connected and Teams is simultaneously processing audio, video encoding, screen sharing, and chat.

The most common cause: the camera is being reclaimed by another application when Teams transitions from preview mode to active meeting mode. Virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Webex, Google Meet) installed on the same machine sometimes register background services that can intercept camera access when a meeting begins. Check whether any other meeting platform has background services running: Task Manager → look for Zoom.exe, WebexHelper, or similar processes even when those applications appear closed.

OBS Virtual Camera and Streaming Software

OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and similar streaming tools install virtual camera drivers that appear as additional camera options in Teams’ device list. When Teams defaults to a virtual camera (which has no source configured), the preview shows black. This is particularly common if OBS was recently installed or updated — the virtual camera may become the system default, and Teams follows the system default.

Teams doesn’t have built-in rotation controls, but the camera driver’s orientation setting (accessible through Device Manager → camera → Properties → Advanced or through the manufacturer app) can correct this.

For cameras where the manufacturer app provides rotation control (many Logitech cameras, for example): open the manufacturer app → find the orientation or rotation setting → adjust until Teams preview shows the correct orientation. Teams Web Client Camera as a Fallback

The web client has full video call capability including camera and microphone, and it manages camera permissions through the browser rather than through Windows or the desktop app. If the browser has camera permission for the Teams site, video works immediately regardless of desktop app issues.

Camera Not Showing After Teams Update

Microsoft Teams updates frequently and occasionally introduces camera handling regressions. If camera stopped working immediately after Teams updated: check the Teams version (click your profile picture → About → Version) and search for that version number alongside “camera not working” in a browser. Known regressions are usually documented in Microsoft’s Tech Community forums within hours of widespread occurrence.

For confirmed Teams regressions: Microsoft typically patches them within 1–2 release cycles (usually weekly). While waiting for the patch, the browser fallback (above) or Classic Teams (if still installable from the old Teams download URL) provides a working camera. If the order can’t be controlled, toggling the camera off and back on (click camera icon to turn off → click again to turn on) after screen sharing starts usually restores the camera feed within a few seconds.
