The original page remains visible on the left side — a split-view layout where both versions are accessible simultaneously. Clicking anywhere in the original page area closes the reading panel and returns to normal browsing.

On some Chrome configurations, Reading Mode must first be enabled through Chrome Flags: type chrome://flags → search “Reading Mode” → enable the flag → relaunch Chrome. Chrome Reading Mode extracts content from whatever is loaded in the browser — it doesn’t bypass paywalls or access content that isn’t present in the DOM. For paywalled articles where only a preview is visible: Reading Mode extracts only the visible preview content, not the blocked content. Some publishers use a “soft paywall” pattern where the full article text is in the DOM but hidden with CSS — in these cases, Reading Mode may or may not extract the hidden content depending on how Chrome’s extraction algorithm handles display:none elements and CSS-based content hiding. Pages following these conventions produce the most reliable and complete Reading Mode extractions.
