Battery not charging on Windows 11 when the laptop is plugged in — the cable is connected, the power symbol shows, but the battery percentage stays the same or drops — is one of those problems that requires figuring out which layer is broken before touching any settings. The three-layer check takes two minutes:

  1. Is the charger working? Different cable, different wall outlet. Some chargers show the LED as on but aren’t delivering adequate power. If another charger works: hardware charger failure.
  2. Is Windows recognising the charger? Click the battery icon in the taskbar — does it say “Plugged in, charging” or “Plugged in, not charging”? “Charging” means Windows sees it and it’s working. “Not charging” despite charging showing: Windows sees the charger but isn’t using it. “On battery” despite being plugged in: Windows isn’t detecting the charger at all.
  3. Battery health? Download BatteryInfoView or run powercfg /batteryreport in administrator Command Prompt → opens an HTML report showing battery capacity history. A battery at 20% of its original capacity explains “not charging” — some laptops stop charging batteries that have degraded severely.

“Plugged in, not charging” — the most common Windows scenario

This is a software fix, not hardware. Windows shows the charger connected but deliberately isn’t charging — usually because of a battery threshold setting or a power management choice.

The fastest fix: shutdown completely (not restart, not sleep — full shutdown) → hold the power button until the machine turns off → unplug the power cable → hold the power button for 30 seconds → plug the cable back in → power on. This resets the embedded controller (EC) that manages power delivery without opening the machine. Resolves “not charging” in a surprising number of cases.

Battery charge threshold settings

Many laptop manufacturers ship with battery care or health features enabled — ASUS Battery Care, Lenovo Conservation Mode, HP Battery Health Manager, Dell Optimised Battery Charging. These features intentionally stop charging at 60–80% to extend long-term battery life.

Open the manufacturer utility (Lenovo Vantage, ASUS MyASUS, HP Support Assistant, Dell Command Center) → find battery settings → look for Conservation Mode, Battery Threshold, or similar → disable or adjust the threshold. If the laptop is always plugged in, charging to 100% is correct. If you want to extend battery lifespan: charging to 80% is a reasonable trade-off, but it means the battery stops at 80%, which can be mistaken for “not charging” when it’s actually working as configured.

ACPI battery driver

Device Manager → Batteries → look for “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” → right-click → Uninstall device → restart. Windows reinstalls the battery driver automatically on next boot. After restart, plug in the charger and check whether charging resumes.

This works because the ACPI battery driver handles communication between Windows and the embedded controller that manages charging. A corrupted driver causes Windows to misread the battery and charger state.

BIOS/UEFI update

Battery management — including the charging algorithm and thresholds — runs in the laptop’s firmware, not in Windows. Outdated BIOS sometimes has bugs in the charging logic. Manufacturers issue BIOS updates specifically for battery and power management improvements.

Check the manufacturer’s support page for the laptop model → BIOS/Firmware downloads → read the release notes. Updates mentioning “power management,” “battery charging,” or “AC adapter detection” directly address this. Install on AC power, machine on a stable surface, never during low battery. BIOS updates are safe from the manufacturer’s official page but need to run to completion without interruption.

Power Plan conflict

Some aggressive power plans limit charging as part of their battery-saving configuration. Settings → System → Power → Power mode → switch to “Balanced.” Also: Control Panel → Power Options → your active plan → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Battery → check all battery-related settings. Anything that limits the charge level or manages AC adapter power aggressively could be the culprit.

When it charges to a specific percentage then stops

A battery that charges to 60%, 80%, or another specific percentage then stops: either the manufacturer threshold (above) or the battery has a damaged cell group that causes charging to terminate at a consistent lower level. BatteryInfoView or the powercfg battery report shows battery health — if the full charge capacity is significantly below the design capacity and the “not charging” percentage matches a known cell boundary, hardware battery degradation is the cause.

At this stage: battery replacement is the fix. Laptop batteries are replaceable on most models (£30–80 depending on laptop). iFixit guides most common models. Some ultra-thin laptops have non-user-replaceable batteries — service centre for those.

USB-C charging specifics

Laptops charging via USB-C have additional failure modes. The charger must support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and deliver sufficient wattage. A 30W charger on a laptop that needs 65W may show “Plugged in, not charging” or “Charging slowly” — the charger is connected but underpowered. Check the charger wattage against the laptop’s requirement. The original charger’s wattage is on its label; the laptop’s requirement is in the specifications.

For USB-C not charging: also try a different USB-C port. Some laptops have USB-C ports that support charging and others that don’t — or one port’s Power Delivery controller may have a fault while another works.

Thermal throttling stopping charge

Some laptops are designed to stop or slow battery charging when internal temperatures exceed safe thresholds. This prevents the battery from receiving charge current during heavy load (gaming, video rendering) when thermal output is highest. The laptop shows “plugged in, not charging” during intensive use and resumes charging when temperatures drop during idle periods.

If charging stops during intensive tasks and resumes during idle: this is normal thermal protection, not a fault. Monitor temperatures with HWiNFO64 during the charge interruption — if CPU or battery temperature is above 45°C when charging stops, thermal protection is the mechanism. The fixes: improve cooling (clean vents, better airflow), reduce the workload while charging, or use the manufacturer utility to limit processor performance during charging sessions.

Windows Fast Startup and the embedded controller

Windows Fast Startup saves the kernel state during shutdown and resumes from it on boot. The embedded controller’s power management state is partially saved and resumed too — when the EC’s saved state becomes inconsistent with the current hardware state (after a charger change, a battery swap, or a firmware update), charging doesn’t initialise correctly after the Fast Startup resume.

Test: disable Fast Startup temporarily. Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → uncheck “Turn on fast startup” → shut down → plug in the charger → power on. If charging works after a “real” shutdown (without Fast Startup), re-enable Fast Startup and try the EC reset (the 30-second power button hold from the main fix) to clear the inconsistent state.

Battery calibration and gauge inaccuracy

Over time, the battery’s charge gauge becomes inaccurate — the battery shows 20% when it’s actually at 5%, or shows 100% but dies quickly. This “not charging” appearance happens when the gauge shows full (100%) but the battery is physically at 75% — the gauge is wrong rather than the charging being wrong.

Battery calibration: charge to 100% → let it discharge completely until the laptop shuts off → charge to 100% again without interruption → repeat 2–3 times. This recalibrates the gauge against the actual battery chemistry. Modern batteries have built-in battery management ICs that handle this automatically, but on older batteries (3+ years) manual calibration cycles sometimes improve gauge accuracy significantly.

Multiple power profiles and the active profile

If Lenovo Vantage, Dell Command Center, HP OMEN Control Center, or similar manufacturer utility is installed: these create additional power profiles beyond Windows’ built-in ones. Some profiles (Gaming Mode, Performance Mode) configure the system to draw maximum power from the charger for the machine rather than the battery — “plugged in, not charging” because the charger output is being consumed entirely by the running system with none left over for charging.

Switch to a non-performance profile in the manufacturer utility → check whether charging resumes. If it does: the performance profile was consuming all charger power. Either accept charging only in non-performance mode, or use a higher-wattage charger that can supply both the running system’s peak power demand and battery charging simultaneously.

Third-party battery utilities and conflicts

Software like BatteryBar, Battery Optimizer, and some energy management suites install drivers that intercept battery management signals. When these drivers have bugs or compatibility issues with Windows 11, they can cause the battery manager to misreport charging state or actively block charging to apply their own threshold management.

Uninstall any third-party battery management software → restart → check whether charging works normally. If it does: the third-party tool was interfering. These tools add minimal benefit over the manufacturer’s own utility and Windows’ built-in management — removing them simplifies the battery management stack and usually results in more reliable behaviour.

Running powercfg /batteryreport for detailed health data

Administrator Command Prompt → powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:battery.html" → open the resulting file in a browser. The report shows:

  • Design Capacity: what the battery was rated for when new
  • Full Charge Capacity: what it can currently hold
  • Cycle Count: how many charge/discharge cycles it’s had
  • Battery History: capacity trend over time

A Full Charge Capacity that’s less than 60% of Design Capacity explains most “not charging to 100%” issues — the battery physically can’t hold more charge. A capacity decline of more than 20% per year indicates accelerated degradation. The cycle count (typically 300–500 cycles for good durability, 500+ for some modern laptop batteries) alongside the capacity gives a complete picture of the battery’s remaining useful life.

Partial charging — charged but drains faster than expected

A battery that charges and shows 100% but dies much faster than it used to: this is battery degradation, not a charging failure. The gauge says 100% but the battery’s actual capacity is 40% of original. The battery charges to its current full capacity (which is 40% of what it was) and that’s genuinely all it can hold.

The powercfg battery report confirms this. When Full Charge Capacity is significantly below Design Capacity: the battery needs replacement, not driver reinstallation or setting changes. Software fixes can’t restore lost battery cell capacity.

A note on when to act versus when to wait: “Battery not charging” that appeared today and the laptop was fine yesterday without any changes is almost always the EC reset or ACPI driver reinstall. “Battery not charging” that’s been getting progressively worse over months is almost always battery degradation. The history of the symptom is the most informative single diagnostic input — sudden onset points at software or firmware; gradual onset points at hardware.

And the final practical check before any troubleshooting: confirm the charging indicator light on the charger brick itself is lit. Some charger failures show no LED. Confirm the wall outlet is live (plug in something else). Check the USB-C or barrel connector for debris or damage. These physical checks take 60 seconds and occasionally reveal the entire problem — a bent pin in the barrel connector or lint in the USB-C port is more common than any software cause and is usually fixable in seconds.

One scenario that’s genuinely puzzling when it happens: the battery charges overnight while the laptop is off but doesn’t charge when the laptop is running. This indicates the charger’s wattage is exactly sufficient for the running system but not enough surplus for battery charging. Total power draw of running system = charger capacity. No headroom means no charging. Plugging in under heavy load stops charging; plugging in during light tasks or while powered off allows charging. The solution is a higher-wattage charger. Check the original charger’s wattage and the laptop’s maximum power requirement in its specifications — a charger 10–20% higher wattage than the rated requirement gives the headroom needed for simultaneous operation and charging.

After addressing the charging issue, configure Windows to help the battery last longer going forward: Settings → System → Power → Battery → Battery saver → set to activate at 20% rather than the default. This reduces screen brightness and limits background activity when the battery gets low, extending the remaining charge.
