Windows 11 pen or stylus not working — the Surface Pen not drawing, a Wacom tablet pen not responding, or generic touch/pen input missing — requires knowing whether the pen hardware is being detected at all before applying fixes. Fix 3: Windows Ink settings
Settings → Bluetooth and devices → Pen and Windows Ink → confirm pen features are enabled. Also check: if “Use your pen as a mouse when it’s not hovering” is enabled, it may affect how some applications respond to pen input. Disable it and test.

Fix 4: Palm rejection
Palm rejection prevents accidental touches while drawing. If palm rejection is too aggressive: the pen strokes disappear when your palm rests on the screen. Settings → Bluetooth and devices → Touchscreen → “Touch sensitivity” (if available) or the specific application’s touch/pen settings control this.

Fix 5: Digitizer driver for built-in stylus
Laptops with built-in stylus support (Surface, Dell XPS, HP Spectre, Lenovo Yoga) use a digitizer that requires a specific driver. Device Manager → Human Interface Devices → look for “HID-compliant pen” or similar. If it has a yellow triangle: update the driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page. A corrupted digitizer driver causes the pen to stop responding entirely even though the hardware is fine.
Fix 6: Pen calibration
Search “Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input” in Start → follow the calibration process. Mis-calibration causes the pen’s on-screen position to not match where you’re actually drawing, which can feel like the pen “isn’t working” when it’s actually working but offset.

Pen input vs touch input — important distinction

If the pen works in the Windows Ink workspace or Notepad but not in a specific application: that application may not have pen input support in its Windows implementation. Checking the application’s documentation or support forum for “Windows pen support” or “stylus input” confirms whether the app supports pen input at all.
Hover detection issues
Active styluses (Wacom, Microsoft Pen Protocol) can hover above the digitizer and show the cursor position before touching. If hover works (cursor moves as you bring the pen close) but drawing doesn’t (no marks when pressing): the pen’s tip pressure sensor has an issue. The pressure threshold may be set too high, or the tip may be worn and not making reliable contact.
For Wacom: open Wacom Desktop Center → Properties → Pen tab → test pressure at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the pen while watching the pressure bar confirms whether tip pressure is being detected. If the bar doesn’t move with firm pressure: the pen tip may need replacement (Wacom pens have replaceable nibs). Wacom includes replacement nibs with most pens and sells them separately.
Pen-specific Windows application settings
Professional drawing applications (Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate for Windows) have independent pen and tablet settings within the application. Even with a correctly installed driver:
- The application may have its own pressure curve settings
- “Wintab” vs “Windows Ink” API selection within the app affects pen input quality
- Some applications need to be launched after the driver loads fully (opening before driver initialisation causes pen to not be detected within that app)

USI stylus on Chromebook-style Windows laptops
USI (Universal Stylus Initiative) pens are designed for Chromebooks and certain Windows laptops. USI pens work with compatible digitizers without needing pairing — the stylus communicates directly with the screen hardware. On Windows 11 devices with USI digitizers: Settings → Bluetooth and devices → Pen and Windows Ink shows USI pen information when a USI pen is in range. If a USI pen isn’t working on a Windows device: confirm the device specifically supports USI (not just MPP or Wacom AES) — these protocols are not interchangeable and a pen for one won’t work with a digitizer designed for another.
Pen lag and latency
Drawing with a pen that has noticeable lag between physical movement and on-screen marks:
- Enable “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling” (Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling) — this reduces display latency including pen input rendering
- Use a high refresh rate display (120Hz+ significantly reduces perceived pen lag compared to 60Hz)
- Check whether the application is running with GPU acceleration — software rendering is slower and increases pen lag

Surface Pen modes and compatibility

For professional artists switching from a dedicated drawing tablet to a pen display or laptop with integrated pen input: the experience difference between a Wacom Intuos (dedicated USB tablet) and a Surface or pen-enabled laptop (display-integrated) is significant. The dedicated tablet provides more reliable pressure detection and no palm detection issues because your palm never touches the drawing surface. Display-integrated drawing requires more careful palm rejection configuration and may have slightly higher latency due to the additional display layer between pen and surface. Both work well with proper setup, but the configuration path differs.
Wintab API vs Windows Ink API
The two APIs that drawing applications use for pen input produce different experiences:
- Wintab: older API, direct hardware access, maximum compatibility with Wacom hardware, preferred by older Photoshop versions and some professional tools
- Windows Ink: newer Microsoft API, better multi-device support, required for MPP pens like Surface Pen to work correctly at full functionality
When a pen works in one app but not another: the apps are likely using different APIs. Check the app’s pen settings for an API selection.
