Nearby Sharing is Windows 11’s built-in wireless file transfer feature — it sends files, photos, links, and other content directly between two Windows PCs in the same room using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. No USB drives, no email to yourself, no cloud upload required. If both PCs are nearby and have Nearby Sharing enabled: it takes about 30 seconds to send a file from one machine to the other. The main limitation to know before diving in: Nearby Sharing currently works only between Windows 10/11 PCs. Android phones aren’t supported directly (use Phone Link or Bluetooth for phone-to-PC sharing). iPhones have no direct integration.
Enabling Nearby Sharing
Settings → System → Nearby sharing → toggle to “My devices only” (shares only with PCs signed into the same Microsoft account) or “Everyone nearby” (shares with any nearby Windows PC). Both sender and receiver need Nearby Sharing enabled — it’s off by default on most machines.
Alternatively: Quick Settings (Win+A) → if the “Nearby sharing” tile is visible, clicking it toggles the feature. Add the tile if missing: Win+A → pencil icon → Add → Nearby sharing.
The “My devices only” setting is appropriate for sharing between your own PCs (home desktop and laptop, for example). “Everyone nearby” allows receiving from any nearby Windows device — useful in office or classroom environments but exposes you to unsolicited share requests from strangers in public spaces.
Sending a file
In File Explorer: right-click any file → “Share” → Nearby sharing → nearby devices appear in the share sheet. Click the target device. On the receiving machine: a notification appears in the bottom-right corner with “Accept” and “Decline” options. Accept → the file downloads to the Downloads folder (or the configured save location).
From a browser: sharing a link or webpage is equally straightforward. In Edge: the share button (the “…” menu → Share or use the share icon) → Nearby sharing → select the receiving device. The target machine receives a notification that opens the link in its default browser when accepted.
Other share-capable apps also integrate: right-clicking an image in Photos → Share → Nearby sharing works the same way. Any Windows app that supports the system Share dialog can use Nearby Sharing.
Save location
Settings → System → Nearby sharing → “Save files I receive to” → by default, files go to the Downloads folder. Change this to a more specific location if you want received files to land somewhere more organised — a shared network folder, a project-specific directory, or a dedicated “Incoming” folder.
Why Nearby Sharing sometimes doesn’t work
The most common reasons the receiving device doesn’t appear in the share list:
- Nearby Sharing off on one device: both machines need it enabled. The receiving machine won’t appear in the sender’s list if it’s turned off.
- Both devices not on the same Wi-Fi network: Nearby Sharing uses Wi-Fi for data transfer after Bluetooth discovery. If the machines are on different networks (one on 2.4GHz, one on 5GHz band of the same router typically still works, but different networks won’t).
- Bluetooth off on one device: Bluetooth handles discovery of nearby devices. If Bluetooth is disabled: Nearby Sharing can’t find other machines even if Wi-Fi is active.
- Windows firewall blocking the connection: Windows Defender Firewall should automatically allow Nearby Sharing traffic, but a third-party firewall may block it. Check that the “Nearby Sharing” rule is enabled in Windows Firewall advanced settings.
- “My devices only” set but different Microsoft accounts: devices appear in “My devices only” mode only if they’re signed into the same Microsoft account. If two PCs use different accounts: switch to “Everyone nearby.”

Nearby Sharing vs alternatives for PC-to-PC transfer

For cross-platform transfers (Windows to Android, Windows to Mac): Nearby Sharing doesn’t help. LocalSend (free, open-source) works across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS on the same network — it’s the closest equivalent to Nearby Sharing with cross-platform support. Snapdrop is the browser-based alternative that requires no installation.
Batch file sharing
Select multiple files in File Explorer (Ctrl+click or Shift+click) → right-click → Share → Nearby sharing → the selected files are queued and sent as a batch. The receiving machine shows a single notification for the batch rather than one per file. This makes sending a set of photos or documents as quick as sending a single file — no need to compress into a zip first for small batches.
Transfer speed
Speed depends on the Wi-Fi connection quality between devices. On a modern Wi-Fi 6 network with both devices in the same room: a 500MB file transfers in 30-60 seconds. On older Wi-Fi or across walls: slower. Nearby Sharing isn’t optimised for very large files (multi-GB video files, for example) — a USB drive or network share is faster for those. For documents, photos, and files up to a few hundred MB: Nearby Sharing is typically faster than email or cloud upload/download cycles.
Nearby Sharing’s value is in its simplicity and zero setup for the receiver — they just accept a notification. For ad-hoc file sharing between Windows PCs that are physically in the same location, it removes all the usual friction of “how do I get this file to that machine?” with a two-click share flow that most users find faster than any alternative once they’ve used it once.
Nearby Sharing discovery — how devices find each other
When Nearby Sharing is enabled: Windows continuously broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal that other Windows devices with Nearby Sharing enabled detect. This discovery process is passive — your device doesn’t need to do anything to be found beyond having the feature turned on. Once a device is detected via Bluetooth: the actual file transfer uses Wi-Fi Direct or Wi-Fi for higher speed than Bluetooth can provide for large files.
The discovery range is approximately 30 feet (10 metres) — typical Bluetooth range. Beyond that distance: devices won’t appear in each other’s share lists. For consistent Nearby Sharing in office environments: ensure both devices are on the same floor or room. Walls and interference reduce the effective range, and some building materials (concrete, metal structures) reduce it further.
Sharing links from the browser
One underused application of Nearby Sharing: sending browser tabs between devices. Researching something on your desktop PC and want to continue reading on your laptop? Edge (and Chrome with the right setup) → Share → Nearby sharing → the link opens on the receiving device’s browser immediately on accept. This is more convenient than emailing a link to yourself, copying to clipboard via cloud, or using a “continue on device” feature that requires account sync to be set up.
The same works in reverse: on a laptop returning to your main desktop, sharing a tab to the desktop machine takes two clicks. For users who work across multiple Windows PCs: Nearby Sharing for tab and link handoff is the fastest cross-device browsing continuation available without requiring any additional software or account setup.
Privacy considerations
When “Everyone nearby” is enabled: any Windows 11 PC nearby running Nearby Sharing can attempt to send you files. The receiving device always shows a confirmation notification with the sender’s device name — you can decline any share request. However, the sender can see your device name in their share list when they’re within Bluetooth range.
In public spaces (coffee shops, co-working spaces, airports): “My devices only” is the safer setting. Your device still appears visible to your own other devices (signed in to the same Microsoft account) but not to strangers’ PCs. Switching to “Everyone nearby” only when in a controlled environment (home, private office) provides the flexibility without the public exposure.
Nearby Sharing with Microsoft accounts — cross-device coordination
With “My devices only” and multiple PCs signed into the same Microsoft account: Nearby Sharing intelligently shows only your own devices in the share list. This is convenient for users with a home desktop and laptop — share a file from one to the other without switching to “Everyone nearby” and potentially exposing the device to other machines in the area.
The Microsoft account link also enables future Nearby Sharing improvements — Microsoft has progressively expanded phone integration, and cross-device sharing features have grown with each Windows 11 update. Features available in 2026 may include improved Android integration through the Link to Windows partnership, making the Nearby Sharing ecosystem wider than the current Windows-only implementation.
When Nearby Sharing is the right tool
The specific scenarios where Nearby Sharing beats every alternative:
- Sending a document from a work laptop to a home desktop (or vice versa) without using cloud storage
- Sharing a screenshot or photo between two PCs in the same room immediately after capturing
- Passing a link from a meeting room display PC to a laptop
- Sending files to a colleague’s PC in the same office without navigating network shares
- Handing off research browser tabs when switching between devices mid-session
Nearby Sharing is a narrow but genuinely useful tool for its specific use case. It’s not a replacement for network shares (for regular high-volume transfers), cloud sync (for persistent access across devices), or USB drives (for large files or offline scenarios). It fills the gap of “I have a file on this PC and I need it on that PC right now with zero setup” — and it fills that gap with no friction at all once both devices have the feature enabled.
Troubleshooting Nearby Sharing notification not appearing
If the sender says they sent a file but no notification appeared on the receiving machine:
- Check that Nearby Sharing is actually on: Settings → System → Nearby sharing → should show “My devices only” or “Everyone nearby,” not “Off”
- Check that Do Not Disturb isn’t blocking notifications: Win+N → notification center → check if DND is active (could suppress the share notification)
- Check Focus Assist: if a Focus session is active, incoming share notifications may be silenced
- Verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network: the receiving device may have dropped to a different network
- Re-enable Nearby Sharing by toggling it off and on: sometimes the Bluetooth discovery process needs restarting
If the device doesn’t appear in the sender’s share list at all (rather than the notification not showing): the issue is at the discovery level — Bluetooth or the distance/interference mentioned above. If the device appears but the transfer fails partway through: Wi-Fi connectivity between the devices is the likely cause — try moving them closer together.
Nearby Sharing represents the kind of feature that becomes a daily habit once discovered. The initial setup takes 30 seconds; the ongoing use takes two clicks per share.
