Windows 11 Copilot is the AI assistant built into the operating system — it answers questions, summarises documents, generates images, controls Windows settings, and assists with writing directly on your PC. Windows 11 Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant built into Windows itself — accessible via a Copilot key on supported keyboards, the taskbar button, or Win+C. Unlike a web-based AI tool, Copilot integrates with the PC context — it can see what’s on screen (on Copilot+ PCs) and interact with some Windows settings directly. The Copilot experience varies significantly by hardware. On Copilot+ PCs (machines with a dedicated NPU — Neural Processing Unit — meeting Microsoft’s 40 TOPS threshold), Copilot has access to additional capabilities including screen awareness and faster local processing. On standard Windows 11 machines: Copilot runs as a cloud-connected service, which is still capable but different from the local, privacy-preserving experience on Copilot+ hardware.

Opening and using Copilot

Win+C opens the Copilot sidebar. On keyboards with a Copilot key (a newer addition to Windows keyboards): pressing it opens the same sidebar. Clicking the Copilot button in the taskbar (if enabled) does the same.

The sidebar is a conversational chat interface. Type a question or request and press Enter. Copilot responds with text, formatted answers, code blocks, or links to relevant resources. Follow-up questions work within the same conversation context — it remembers what was discussed earlier in the session.

Practical things Copilot handles well:

  • Explaining concepts and answering factual questions (draws on the same underlying model as Bing Chat)
  • Summarising long text you paste into the chat

Copilot+ PC exclusive features

On Copilot+ PCs, additional AI features are available beyond the chat sidebar:

Recall: a continuously-running visual timeline of everything you’ve done on the PC — every website visited, document opened, image viewed. Recall uses on-device OCR to make this history searchable (“show me that spreadsheet from last week about project costs”). Stored locally and processed on the NPU. As of 2025-2026: Recall is available but controversial due to privacy concerns; it can be disabled in Settings → Privacy & security → Recall.

Live Captions with translation: real-time transcription of any audio on the PC with optional live translation into English from 44 languages. Works on-device using the NPU — no audio sent to the cloud for transcription.

Cocreator (Paint): generate images from text prompts directly in the Windows Paint app using on-device AI generation.

Super Resolution (gaming): AI-enhanced upscaling for games running below native resolution, improving image quality on Copilot+ PCs with compatible GPUs.

Restyle (Photos): AI-powered photo stylisation in the Windows Photos app — apply artistic styles to photos locally on the device.

Copilot in Microsoft 365

Copilot in Windows is different from Microsoft 365 Copilot (the paid enterprise add-on for Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and other Office apps). Windows Copilot is part of Windows 11 and doesn’t require an additional subscription beyond a Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate per-user subscription that adds AI assistance inside Office applications — creating summaries of emails, generating first drafts in Word, analysing data in Excel.

The features overlap in some areas (both can help write text) but serve different contexts. Windows Copilot is the general-purpose sidebar for anything; Microsoft 365 Copilot is deeply integrated with document and email workflows and has access to your actual files and calendar data.

Practical Copilot use patterns

The users who get the most value from Copilot treat it as a “first draft” tool rather than an authority. Common effective patterns:

  • Research starting point: “Explain the difference between TCP and UDP” → get a clear explanation to build on rather than starting from scratch with a search engine
  • Text improvement: paste a drafted email or paragraph → “Make this more concise and professional” → use Copilot’s revision as a starting point, then adjust
  • Code generation: “Write a Python function that reads a CSV and returns the rows where column B is greater than 50” → generates working code, often correct for straightforward requests
  • Quick calculations and conversions: “If I drive 200 miles at 45mph, how long does it take? Convert the result to minutes” → faster than a calculator for multi-step unit problems
  • Windows navigation: “Where is the setting to change my default browser?” → Copilot answers with the path and sometimes provides a direct Settings link

What Copilot doesn’t do well

Being honest about limitations prevents frustration:

  • Real-time information: Copilot’s knowledge has a training cutoff. For current events, live data, or recently-changed information: Bing search integrated into Copilot can supplement, but verify anything time-sensitive
  • Long document processing: the context window limits how much text you can paste in one conversation. Very long documents require splitting or a tool specifically designed for document analysis
  • Precise factual accuracy: AI models hallucinate — generate plausible-sounding but incorrect information. Verify any specific fact, number, or reference that matters before using it
  • File system access on standard PCs: without Copilot+ screen awareness, Copilot doesn’t see your files or what’s on screen unless you paste the content into the chat

Controlling Copilot in Windows 11

Copilot settings: right-click the Copilot button in the taskbar → Settings → options for which data Copilot can access, conversation history preferences, and voice interaction settings. Disabling Copilot entirely: Settings → Personalisation → Taskbar → Copilot toggle → Off removes the taskbar button. The Win+C shortcut still opens the sidebar on some configurations even after disabling the button; fully disabling Copilot for organisational deployment requires Group Policy (Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Copilot → Turn off Windows Copilot).

Privacy with Copilot

On standard Windows 11 (non-Copilot+): conversations with Copilot are sent to Microsoft’s servers for processing. Content typed into Copilot chat is subject to Microsoft’s privacy policy. For sensitive information (passwords, personal data, confidential business content): don’t paste it into the Copilot chat, just as you wouldn’t paste it into a public web form.

On Copilot+ PCs: the Recall feature and some AI features process data locally on the NPU without sending it to the cloud. The privacy profile is different and significantly better for locally-processed features — but verify which features are local vs cloud for any specific feature before assuming local processing.

Windows 11 Copilot is the most visible of Microsoft’s AI integrations into Windows, but it’s not isolated — the Copilot features in Windows connect to a broader Microsoft AI ecosystem that includes Office, Bing, Azure, and hardware-level NPU processing on Copilot+ PCs. Getting familiar with what Windows Copilot can and can’t do on your specific hardware determines how useful it becomes in daily use. For general AI assistance tasks: it’s a capable, immediately accessible tool. Voice interaction with Copilot

Copilot supports voice input — click the microphone icon in the chat or press a configured shortcut to speak your question rather than typing it. The voice input uses Windows’ speech recognition infrastructure, which means it benefits from language packs and speech recognition training configured in Settings → Time & language → Speech.

Voice interaction is useful for: hands-free questions while working with physical materials, quick queries while driving (on a laptop in a car), or accessibility scenarios where typing is difficult. The voice transcription appears in the input box, giving you a chance to review and edit before submitting if needed.

Copilot and Windows actions

Beyond answering questions, Copilot can directly perform some Windows actions. Ask it to: “Turn on dark mode,” “Open the screenshot tool,” “Set a timer for 20 minutes,” “Change my wallpaper,” “Open Settings.” For recognised actions: Copilot either performs the action directly or asks for confirmation before doing so. This turns Copilot into a natural language interface for common Windows tasks — useful for commands you know you want but don’t remember the exact setting location for.

The range of directly-actionable commands is limited and doesn’t cover every Windows feature, but it’s genuinely useful for the most common day-to-day toggles and navigation tasks. Think of it as a more capable version of typing in the Start menu search — it understands intent rather than requiring exact search terms.

Copilot vs web-based AI tools

Copilot in Windows draws on the same underlying AI as ChatGPT competitor Bing Chat / Microsoft Copilot (web). The Windows integration adds one significant advantage: it stays open alongside your work as a sidebar rather than requiring you to switch to a browser tab.
