- Net Nanny: provides category-based filtering and monitoring with a Chrome extension component. Paid subscription, but the PC/Mac coverage is more comprehensive than Google’s free options.
- Qustodio: cross-platform parental control with a Chrome extension for browser-level monitoring. Good option for families with mixed devices (some iOS, some Android, some Windows) who want consistent controls across platforms.
- Family Link for Chrome (Google’s official extension): provides some supervision capabilities for the Chrome browser on Windows and Mac for families using Family Link — less comprehensive than the native Chromebook supervision but extends some Family Link features to the desktop browser environment.
The right choice among these depends on the child’s age, the level of monitoring versus filtering appropriate for that age, and whether the family wants cross-platform consistency or is willing to manage different tools per platform. No single tool covers every platform comprehensively with the same feature depth — the trade-off between comprehensive coverage and management complexity is real.
