Microsoft Edge taking 10+ seconds to open — the icon appears in the taskbar, a loading indicator spins, but the window doesn’t appear for a long time — is a specific performance issue separate from Edge being slow while browsing. Startup slowness is usually caused by Edge loading too much on launch, a profile issue, or startup extensions running heavy tasks. This fits into the wider topic we cover in our Google Chrome Errors.
The good news: Edge has built-in features specifically designed to address startup speed, and most slow-start cases are fixed by configuring them.
Quick fix: Startup Boost
Edge Settings → System and performance → “Startup boost.” When enabled, Edge keeps a lightweight version of itself running in the background after you close it, so the next launch feels nearly instant. The trade-off: Edge uses a small amount of RAM and CPU even when “closed.”
If Startup Boost is already on and Edge is still slow: it may not be starting from a clean state. Turn Startup Boost off → fully close Edge (including from the system tray — look for the Edge icon and right-click → Close) → wait 30 seconds → reopen Edge → turn Startup Boost back on. This resets the preloaded state.
Startup tabs and session restore
Edge configured to “Continue where you left off” restores every tab from the previous session. If the last session had 30 tabs open — especially tabs with active JavaScript, auto-playing media, or web apps — each one starts loading simultaneously on Edge startup, creating significant CPU and network load that makes the initial launch appear to hang.
Settings → Start, home, and new tab → “When Edge starts” → change from “Open tabs from the previous session” to “Open a new tab.” Or: use Tab Groups to save sets of related tabs that you can open manually when needed, rather than auto-restoring everything.
Extensions loading at startup
Extensions run code when Edge starts. Extensions that scan browsing history, sync data, update themselves, or check for new content add real startup time — each one slightly delaying the window appearing on screen. With 10-15 extensions: the cumulative startup overhead is noticeable.
Edge menu → Extensions → Manage Extensions → disable extensions temporarily → restart Edge and time the startup. If dramatically faster: re-enable extensions one at a time to identify which ones are the biggest contributors. Password managers and productivity extensions that check external services on startup are typical culprits.
Edge profile and cached data
A bloated or partially corrupted Edge profile causes startup slowness that doesn’t respond to the session or extension fixes above. Edge’s startup process reads and validates profile data — large profiles (years of browsing data) take longer to validate.
Test: Edge menu → profile icon → Add profile → create a guest profile → open a new Edge window with the guest profile → time the startup. If the guest profile starts instantly while the main profile is slow: the main profile’s data is the issue. Options:
- Ctrl+Shift+Delete → All time → clear browsing data (preserves passwords and favorites if those are checked off)

WebView2 and Edge startup
Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime powers Edge’s rendering. When WebView2 is outdated or has a corrupted installation: Edge startup is significantly slower as it waits for WebView2 to initialise. Settings → Apps → search “WebView2” → Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime → Modify → Repair. After repair: restart and test startup time.
Startup programs and Edge launch delay
If Edge is configured as a startup application (via Task Manager → Startup apps or via Windows startup settings): it launches at Windows startup alongside everything else. When Windows itself is still loading other startup programs, Edge startup times are slower because it’s competing for CPU, RAM, and disk access.
Task Manager → Startup apps → find Edge-related entries → check whether “Microsoft Edge” or “Microsoft Edge Update” is set to launch at startup. Disabling these and launching Edge manually when needed often makes individual Edge launches faster because there’s no competition with the system startup rush.
Antivirus scanning Edge’s startup files
Security software scanning Edge’s executable files and DLLs during startup adds time proportional to the number of files it scans. Adding Edge’s installation directory to the antivirus exclusion list prevents repetitive scanning of known-trusted Edge files. The Edge directory: C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplication or C:Program FilesMicrosoftEdgeApplication.
Edge flags that affect startup
Navigate to edge://flags → search “startup” → look for flags related to startup performance. Experiment with:
- “Parallel downloading” → Enabled (improves general performance, slight startup impact)
- Any “Preload” or “Prefetch” flags — these can help or hurt startup depending on the system

GPU and hardware acceleration at startup
Edge initialises GPU acceleration during startup. On machines with outdated or incompatible GPU drivers: this initialisation fails and retries before Edge falls back to software rendering — adding seconds to startup. Updating the GPU driver from the manufacturer’s website often resolves startup slowness caused by GPU initialisation failure.
To confirm: Settings → System and performance → check whether “Use hardware acceleration when available” is On. If it is and startup is slow: toggle it off → Relaunch → time the startup. If noticeably faster without hardware acceleration: the GPU driver initialisation is the bottleneck. Update the GPU driver and re-enable acceleration.
Edge memory and disk access at startup
Edge reads profile data from disk during startup. On HDDs (hard disk drives), this disk read is significantly slower than on SSDs. If Edge is installed or the profile is stored on an HDD while other system files are on an SSD: moving Edge’s profile data to the SSD dramatically improves startup time.
Edge profile location: navigate to %localappdata%MicrosoftEdgeUser Data. If this folder is on an HDD while C: (Windows) is on an SSD: either the profile folder can be moved (advanced — requires Edge to be configured to use the new path) or moving the entire Windows installation to the SSD is the practical solution for overall system performance including Edge startup.
Edge’s background processes
Even when Edge’s main window is closed, background processes may be running — update services, the crash reporter, extension background workers. These don’t directly cause slow startup but consume resources that Edge needs when it does start.
edge://system/ in the address bar shows Edge’s current process count and memory usage. If many processes are listed while Edge appears closed: some background component isn’t shutting down correctly. Settings → System and performance → “Continue running background apps when Microsoft Edge is closed” → turn Off if you prefer Edge to fully close when the window is closed.
Windows startup and Edge timing
If Edge starts slowly specifically after Windows boots — but opens instantly when relaunched later in the session — the issue is Windows startup congestion rather than Edge itself. Everything competes for CPU, RAM, and disk at boot, and Edge launching during this period gets less than its fair share of resources.
Solutions:
- Don’t launch Edge immediately after booting — wait 60-90 seconds for Windows to finish its own startup tasks before opening the browser
- Reduce other startup programs (Task Manager → Startup apps) to free resources for Edge when it does launch
- Enable Startup Boost — this pre-launches Edge during the Windows boot process when other startup competition is lower, so by the time you click the icon, the heavy lifting is done
Edge update state and startup
Edge checks for updates during startup. On connections where Microsoft’s update servers are slow or partially blocked (corporate networks, VPNs with strict outbound filtering): the update check can delay Edge startup as it waits for a response. Disabling automatic updates isn’t ideal from a security standpoint, but confirming whether the startup delay correlates with network availability identifies the cause.
Test: disconnect from VPN or corporate network → try launching Edge from a direct internet connection → if startup is faster: the corporate network is slowing Edge’s update or service check requests. IT can configure Edge’s update endpoints in the network firewall to ensure they respond quickly rather than timing out.
Progressive Web Apps and startup load
Installed PWAs (Progressive Web Apps) that run at startup add to Edge’s total startup work. Each PWA is essentially a separate Edge instance. If you’ve installed many PWAs (Teams, Outlook, various tools): they all initialise when you first launch Edge.
edge://apps → check which apps are set to “Open at Windows login” → disable this for any PWA you don’t need to start immediately. Reducing the number of auto-starting PWAs reduces Edge’s total startup work proportionally.
Startup time benchmarking
For a precise measurement of Edge startup time and what’s consuming it: edge://performance-metrics/ shows startup latency data. This page records actual measured startup times for recent Edge launches, breaking down time spent in different phases. If startup consistently shows 8+ seconds in one phase, that phase is the bottleneck to address.

Edge startup speed is almost entirely determined by three things: how much data it loads at startup (Startup Boost state, session tabs, extension initialisation), how fast the storage is (SSD vs HDD for profile data), and how healthy the profile is. Enabling Startup Boost, reducing session tabs, and keeping extensions to what you actually use resolves the majority of Edge startup slowness without needing to modify system files or registry settings.
A practical note for enterprise deployments: Edge’s startup time is affected by Group Policy settings that load corporate policies on startup. Managed Edge instances check policy servers when launching, and if those servers are slow or unreachable: startup hangs waiting for policy retrieval. IT can configure policy retrieval to use background refresh rather than synchronous startup retrieval — this allows Edge to start immediately with cached policies while the fresh policy check happens in the background.
Edge vs other browsers: startup comparison
Edge, Chrome, and Firefox all have startup times around 1-3 seconds on modern hardware with SSDs. If Edge is significantly slower than Chrome on the same machine: Edge’s profile or extensions are the differentiating factor, not fundamental architecture. If both are slow: system resources or antivirus scanning are likely bottlenecks for all browsers equally.
The practical test: install a fresh browser (Firefox or Chrome) → launch it with no extensions and no previous session → compare startup time. If the fresh browser starts in 1-2 seconds while Edge takes 10+: Edge’s accumulated configuration is the issue. If both are slow: the system, not Edge, is the bottleneck.
For Edge startup that was fast before and has become progressively slower over months: the most likely cause is profile data growth combined with extension accumulation. Both grow silently over time. A yearly Edge “spring clean” — clearing cached data, removing extensions you no longer use, and reviewing PWAs that start at login — typically restores Edge startup to near-original speed without requiring any deeper system changes. Edge’s built-in privacy dashboard (edge://settings/privacy) also shows the size of each data category, making it easy to identify which type of data has grown the largest and is most worth clearing. One final setting that some users overlook: Settings → Appearance → “Show the Start button in the sidebar.” The Edge sidebar (with the drop-down panels for Microsoft tools) loads additional content at startup. Disabling the sidebar or hiding sidebar components you don’t use reduces what Edge needs to initialise on launch. Settings → Sidebar → “Always show sidebar” → Off, or keep the sidebar but disable individual panes (Discover, Shopping, Tools) that load external content at startup.
